Guided by the Commission Strategic Plan, the Children’s Dental Initiative strives to improve the oral health of children in Orange County. Through collaborative programs directed at prevention of decay in primary teeth in children through age 5, the initiative members conduct screenings, provide sealants and fluoride treatments, offer parent and caregiver education, and improve access to dental care. Current initiative members include Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County and the St. Joseph Hospital Pediatric Dental Care Collaborative.
Healthy Smiles For Kids of Orange County:
A new state-of-the-art children’s dentistry center, funded by the Commission, opened its doors in 2005. Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County is a place where your child can get dental checkups, dental care and learn how to care for their teeth. Dental health is surprisingly important to the overall health of a child.

St. Joseph Hospital of Orange Pediatric Dental Care Collaborative
The St. Joseph Hospital of Orange Pediatric Dental Care Collaborative provides secondary prevention of decay through screening, evaluations, and prophylactic services (i.e. topical fluoride application, cleaning, sealant placement, etc.); treatment for oral disease and decay; referrals for children requiring specialty care to Healthy Smiles For Kids of Orange County; education programs at a growing number of health fairs, schools, and other community settings; and dental education for parents and children at every opportunity.
