Kick-Off Saturday, April 24, 2010 at Irvine Spectrum Center®
IRVINE, Calif. (April 13, 2010) – The 3rd annual Essentials for Young Lives drive kicks off Saturday, April 24 in honor of Mother’s Day, at the Irvine Spectrum Center®.
On April 7, 2010 Commission members were presented with a comprehensive overview of the current “Service Payback Agreements” that a number of community based organizations have with the Commission. The Agreements provide one-time funding for organizations in exchange for the provision of services to families and children in Orange County. Services such as; pediatric dental care, emergency and transitional shelter for homeless families, early developmental screenings to identify developmental disabilities and health and wellness education and activities are covered under the Agreements. These Service Payback Agreements enable numerous community-based organizations to provide vital – and otherwise difficult to access – services to thousands of children and their families.
To honor and celebrate mothers, HomeAid Orange County in partnership with the Children and Families Commission of Orange County and the YMCA of Orange County, are leading a community-wide drive to collect “essential” baby items (diapers, baby wipes, baby food, baby hygiene products) for homeless mothers and their children.
The Children and Families Commission’s Reach Out and Read program partnered with UCI’s Department of Education to offer a field study course in early literacy and childhood education. Students received ongoing training and mentoring from the Early Literacy program staff, and were deployed across the county in Reach Out and Read pediatric offices and clinics reading to young children. The nationwide program promotes early literacy and school readiness with a research-tested, evidence-based model that’s proven to help children develop the language skills they will need to learn to read and succeed in school.
