Building a Foundation for the Future: Healthy Children Ready to Learn

The future of Orange County depends on how well we prepare our children – our future workforce – to succeed. To ensure their success, the programs supported by the Children and Families Commission of Orange County need your support-in dollars, leadership and volunteer activity.

Our programs can benefit from your involvement, from advising them on operational efficiency, to providing funding, to encouraging your employees to volunteer.

The Commission especially needs the organizational acumen of business leaders. Consider the case of Jack Shaw, a former vice chairman of Deloitte & Touche, who was concerned to learn that more than half of all children living in California suffer from untreated tooth decay—and, in fact, only 40 percent of Orange County children under six had ever visited a dentist. He acted to establish and chair the Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County program, which now provides dental services for thousands of children. As a result of his leadership, Jack Shaw was honored in 2004 with the Commission’s Peter A. Hartman award.

There are boundless opportunities for other business executives to follow Jack Shaw’s example in creating new programs, or improving existing ones.
