The Commission has made a tremendous investment in early learning – both in literacy and more recently in math.
The Commission believes the core of California’s future competitiveness will be the economic growth provided by workers who excel in the STEM subjects—of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Until recently, it was widely believed that the mathematical thinking that underlies future success in STEM careers was best left for children in higher grades. The Commission recognizes new evidence from a large body of research that children can make big cognitive strides from mathematical thinking at astonishingly young ages. This research challenges the Commission to focus attention on how we approach and promote early learning to help young children succeed in STEM subjects.
Sesame Workshop and PNC Bank introduced and launched their new learning tool – Math is Everywhere – in 2010. The kit provides helpful tips for parents and caregivers on how to make math a part of a child’s everyday learning experience.
